WHAT IS A COPPER IUD?
It is a T shaped plastic rod that has a copper coil around it. The Copper emitted from this copper coil is toxic to the sperms. It immobilises them. So if the sperms can’t move , they can’t get to the egg. And if they can’t get to the egg then they can’t fertilise the egg and therefore no pregnancy.
WHERE IS THE COPPER IUD PLACED?
It is placed into your uterus via a simple bedside procedure. Your doctor places a speculum (which is the same device used during a pap smear) in your vagina to open it so she can visualize your cervix. The device then gets inserted through the cervix into the uterus.|
WHY WOULD ANYONE CONSIDER COPPER IUD INSTEAD OF JUST TAKING AN EMERGENCY PILL? THE COPPER IUD SEEMS MORE INVASIVE.
The Copper ID not only serves as an emergency contraception but it can be left in the uterus for up 5 years as a long term contraception. Emergency pills like Ella and Postinor do not confer you long term contraception.
Furthermore in girls who are overweight or obese, the emergency contraceptive pills like Ella and Postinor are less effective. With Copper IUDs, your weight does not influence its effectiveness.
SO HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COPPER IUD IN PREGNANCY PREVENTION?
It is 99% effective. Remember there is not contraception which is 100% effective.
HOW LONG AFTER UNPROTECTED SEXUAL INTERCOURSE CAN THE COPPER IUD BE INSERTED?
The copper IUD can be inserted up to 5 days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. And you can have it removed anytime you want. It can however last for 5 years.Drop in an enquiry if you are keen on a Copper IUD insertion at InSync Medical Clinic. We will discuss with you if this option is the best for you.
