IUD Insertion

Commonly Used For

  • Mirena (hormonal)
  • Copper (non-hormonal)

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

How does this procedure work?

Mirena and copper IUDs (intrauterine devices) are inserted via a simple procedure into the uterus. We do this at the bedside and no sedation is required.

The IUDs serve to provide contraception that can last 5 years once inserted.

What can I expect after the procedure?

Expect some cramping to persist for a few days after the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

If all goes smoothly the procedure should only take a few minutes.

How many sessions are required?

The IUD is inserted in a single session.

Who is not suitable for this procedure?

You obviously cannot have this procedure done if you are pregnant.

Occasionally, the insertion may be difficult or impossible if your cervix is very tight with strictures or fibrous tissues blocking the way of entry into the uterus. Sometimes the cervix can be oddly shaped with a kink in the path of the cervical canal making insertion very challenging.

The IUD most DEFINITELY CAN be inserted in women who have never given birth.

What should I prepare before the procedure?

IUDs are best inserted within the first 7 days of your menstrual cycle. This helps us to know for sure that you are not pregnant and the insertion is slightly more comfortable and easier during this period.

Do note that there may be moderate to intense cramping during the procedure. This intensity commonly stops immediately after the procedure is complete.

Bring along a panty liner as there may be a small amount of bleeding after the procedure.

You can find out more about the insertion procedure here.

Are there any side effects?

Mirena IUDs can produce hormonal side effects like acne and weight gain. The acne is often temporary. These side effects do not happen to all individuals.

Periods are stopped in about 70-80% of women about 6 months after the Mirena IUD is inserted, and they will experience no periods for the duration that the Mirena IUD remains in their uterus. This is healthy for conservation of iron from significantly reduced blood loss.

Copper IUDs may cause heavier menstrual bleeding and more cramping with each menstrual cycle.

There are also risks involved during the insertion procedure, hence the importance of getting the procedure done by an experienced doctor. The risks include:

● Perforation of the cervix if too much force is applied
● Spontaneous expulsion of your IUD if not placed appropriately

What is the cost of this procedure?

The total cost of the procedure would vary depending of the type of IUD inserted:

  • Mirena IUD – $600
  • Copper IUD – $300
  • IUD insertion – $180
  • Consultation – $70

I'd spent a while trying to find a general practitioner in Singapore with some very, very mixed results (although I will admit to being a difficult patient sometimes). Dr. Jess was recommended to me when I suffered an acute condition and I can't believe how lucky I am to have found her when I did. She has that fantastic ability to be both amazingly friendly and approachable whilst still being incredibly knowledgeable, professional and focused on getting the best outcome possible for your health needs at the same time. As someone who has a background history in medical research and teaching medical students, I'm constantly impressed with the way Dr. Jess has always used both trusted, conservative methods whilst also being up to date with new techniques and the latest knowledge, and will research for answers and present it in a manageable, down-to-earth and tailored way - or recommend excellent specialists when required. I cannot recommend her highly enough, and she would be my doctor of choice no matter where I lived in Singapore. Also worth mentioning is that her staff are always very polite, friendly, competent and go out of their way to be helpful. I don't write reviews very often, but five incredibly well deserved stars.

Last week (13th Feb 2020) was my first visit to this clinic. I was very impressed and satisfied with InSync Medical Women's Clinic. Dr. Jess was very attentive and detailed in examining my situation. Her explanation was very clear and understandable. With her patience, I was able to ask lots of questions and understand my situation much better than before. (Thank you, Dr. Jess) Price wise, it is reasonable and I would HIGHLY recommend this clinic. Again, thank you!

Dr Jess is an amazing doctor with a beautiful heart. What I really love about her is that is super realistic. She does not promise rapid/fake results. She is very humble and I really like it that spent her time to talk and explain to me about my condition in detail. I have been to so many other doctors for the same. They will just talk briefly and try to push me to start the treament on the spot / nurses will start discussing on pricing.Wasted my time and money in the wrong clinic before. However, Dr Jess is just different. She is not greedy. Very helpful and high level of professionlism and empathy. And her staff Hani is super sweet too. Customer service top notch. Sometime I send message so late when i need something urgently. Hani will still reply to me patiently. I am so lucky I finally found the best doctor and her assitant for my lady needs 🙂 . I only have one regret-I didnt find them earlier.
