Common penile lumps and bumps:
Genital Warts
- Description: Small, flesh-colored, cauliflower-like growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).
- Cause: HPV infection, which is sexually transmitted.
- Symptoms: Often painless but can be itchy or irritating. Warts can grow and multiply if untreated.
- Treatment: Can be treated with topical medications like Aldara and Podofilm, cryotherapy (freezing), or CO2 laser therapy for removal.
Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)
- Description: Small, dome-shaped, flesh-colored bumps that typically appear around the head of the penis (corona).
- Cause: Normal anatomical variation.
- Symptoms: Usually asymptomatic (no pain or discomfort), but may be a cosmetic concern.
- Treatment: Can be removed with CO2 laser therapy if desired for cosmetic reasons.
Fordyce Spots
- Description: Small, pale, or yellowish bumps that can appear on the shaft of the penis or scrotum.
- Cause: Ectopic sebaceous glands (glands that normally produce oil for skin).
- Symptoms: Harmless but can be cosmetically bothersome.
- Treatment: Can be removed with CO2 laser therapy for a smooth, aesthetically pleasing result.
Lymphocele (Lymphatic Cysts)
- Description: Clear fluid-filled cysts that appear after trauma or injury to the lymphatic system.
- Cause: Blockage or injury to lymph vessels.
- Symptoms: Typically painless but may become larger over time.
- Treatment: Surgical removal or CO2 laser if needed.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia
- Description: Enlarged sebaceous glands that form small, yellowish bumps.
- Cause: Overgrowth of sebaceous glands.
- Symptoms: Typically benign but can be unsightly.
- Treatment: Can be treated with CO2 laser therapy for a smooth outcome.
Tyson’s Spots
- Description: Small, white or yellowish papules (bumps) found on the underside of the penis, often around the frenulum.
- Cause: Normal sebaceous (oil) glands.
- Symptoms: Generally asymptomatic and harmless, though some may want them removed for aesthetic reasons.
- Treatment: Can be safely removed using CO2 laser or other minimally invasive procedures.
Angiokeratomas
- Description: Small, dark red or blue bumps caused by enlarged blood vessels, often appearing on the scrotum, penis, or around the genital area.
- Cause: Can be linked to aging, genetic predisposition, or medical conditions like diabetes.
- Symptoms: Can cause mild discomfort or be a cosmetic concern.
- Treatment: Can be removed with CO2 ablative lasers, which vaporize the growth without affecting surrounding tissue.
Penile and Scrotal Cysts
- Description: Fluid-filled sacs under the skin that can appear anywhere on the penis or scrotum. They may vary in size.
- Cause: Blocked glands or ducts.
- Symptoms: May cause discomfort or pain if large, or may become infected.
- Treatment: Removal is typically done via CO2 laser or surgical excision.
Molluscum Contagiosum (Water Warts)
- Description: Small, raised, shiny, and dome-shaped lesions with a central dimple.
- Cause: A viral infection (poxvirus) that spreads through skin-to-skin contact.
- Symptoms: Usually painless, but they can cause itching or irritation.
- Treatment: Lesions can be removed using CO2 laser, cryotherapy, or topical treatments.
