What are Genital Warts?
Genital warts are infectious clusters of skin coloured lesion that can look like a cauliflower, usually appearing as small, rough growths on the skin and mucous membranes in the genital and anal areas. Common causes include, various types of viruses like the Molluscum Cantagiosum Virus (MCV) and the HPV virus, unprotected sexual activity and compromised immune system. Even if there are no visible warts, the HPV virus can still be passed to sexual partners. Any bumps in the genital areas should be shown to your doctor, so that the correct diagnosis can be made as not all bumps are warts.
Early treatment can help manage symptoms, prevent complications and reduce the risk of transmission.

Genital Warts Treatment Options
A CO2 laser is our preferred method to vaporise warts as it has better precision and scarring is reduced.
Aldara cream come in little sachets and can be applied to warts on a daily basis. Although, they work far more slowly compared to lasers or electrocautery, they are painless. And can be applied by yourself at home unlike podophyllotoxins.
After the injection of a local anaesthetic, the warts are desiccated with electrosurgery, which uses special tips powered by electricity to damage the warts. The warts are physically removed on the same day of the procedure.
We use drugs such as podophyllotoxins to hamper the division and growth of the warts. The drug must be applied by a doctor and is not prescribed to patients to use on their own at home.
CO2 laser: Our Preferred Method
CO2 laser treatment is highly effective for removing genital warts due to:
- its precision and ability to target the wart tissue without affecting surrounding healthy skin.

The laser uses concentrated carbon dioxide to vaporize the wart tissue, causing it to break down and be absorbed by the body over time. Studies have shown that the recurrence rates for CO2 laser therapy are lower than those for treatments like cryotherapy (freezing), topical medications (such as podophyllin), or electrosurgery. This is because the laser allows for precise removal of the wart, including the deeper layers, which can help reduce the chances of regrowth.
However, no treatment can guarantee a 100% cure rate, as the human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for genital warts, can remain dormant in the skin. While the CO2 laser targets visible warts, there’s still a possibility that HPV can remain in the surrounding tissue, potentially leading to recurrence. That said, CO2 laser has one of the highest success rates when it comes to preventing recurrence.

Are genital warts dangerous?

Are genital warts contagious?
Yes, genital warts are highly contagious. Avoid sexual contact while warts are present and follow your doctor’s guidance to minimize the risk of spreading the virus.

Is treatment painful?
Most treatments for genital warts are minimally invasive and cause little to no discomfort. Topical treatments and cryotherapy are generally well-tolerated, while laser ablation is done under local anesthesia for comfort.
How long does it take to cure genital warts?
If you have a good intact immune system, the lesions can clear completely within 6 to 12 months. In some cases, the disease can persist for 3 to 5 years and can occasionally leave scars.
Can genital warts come back after treatment?
Yes, genital warts can recur because the HPV virus may remain in your body even after the warts are removed. Proper follow-up care and a healthy immune system can help reduce the risk of recurrence.
